Poems

Read poems from Chapters 1 and 2 of  the upcoming book, Remember Me – a collection of poems, thoughts and letters written by Bryan T. Clark.

Chapter 1 – The Journey

My Child

Born with chocolate brown eyes
You lay in my arms
As I hold you for the first time

Oh, how I wish the world
Would love you the same

Your brown skin will not let you hide
Some will never see any more than just that

You will grow up with racism and ignorance
Just as I

Oh, how I wished liberty and equality had overshadowed it by now
But it hasn’t

I will equip you for the future to know
Juneteenth, Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr.

I will unselfishly share my knowledge and understanding with you
And you will bring about change to the world
Just as your brothers and sisters did before you

Now, don’t be scared my child
Because you were born in America

You can succeed
Anyone can

But you must seize the opportunity
Swim my sweet child

Born with chocolate brown eyes
Swim my child

The Dilemma

Good or evil
Right or wrong

Some call it a moral compass
That whispers in your ear
The fork in the road

It’s there, within us

It’s that moral dilemma
That causes us the agony

It’s A Choice

I know it is not what you wished
Believe me when I say I didn’t choose it for myself

Consoling me, holding me
As I cried out my tears

Mom, you have always been there, your unconditional love

Dad, I’m sorry
I tried baseball and football
I tried to be that boy and failed

You never understood me
You said talk to your momma

Conversations were awkward
And many times, backward

The day I told you
The skies were gray

I saw it in your eyes
As they could not lie

I described who I was
Letting you in for the very first time

Now the choice is yours
As you know who I am

This is my voice
It is who I am

Chapter 2 – Dissecting Love

My Lover

You are my teacher
In so many ways in life

You are my compass

When I am lost in my thinking
Wrong in my conclusion
And damning myself

You slow me down
And show me the way

You make me laugh
And you have made me cry

You take my hand
And whisper sweet words

You chase the hurt away
So I can breath

My heart is set on you
I offer it to you, for you
And only you

It will not waver, dull or fade
It is really quite simple

My lover
It is really quite simple

I Miss You

As I sit by the Bay
I wish you were here
To share this shore
On such a beautiful day

I think of our time together
Who knew we’d be apart

No not really
You need not be close
To still be here

You’re in my dreams
You’re in my thoughts
You’re in my heart

I miss you

The Gift

In the beginning we could never have planned it
Let alone see what it would grow to be

It was a moment in time sitting on a rock
We were led to believe

So sweet and tender
We had our hearts before one another

Like the change in the seasons
The season rushes through
Yet all I want is to spend it with you

Destiny

Like the wave reaching the shore
My love cannot be stopped or controlled as it unfolds before you

You challenge me to understand my journey and to examine the road
To understand the darkness as well as the light

Teacher, friend, lover and husband
Hope, peace, joy and love

They are a gift to me
